Gambling Throughout History
Gambling is simply the wagering of money or other valuable items in a risky event but surely pays more than the one at risk when won. There are many games in which gambling could be incorporated such as card games, sports events, horse races and just about anything else you could think of. There are gambling games which require you have skills and mastery to win while there are some which only use luck as the investment.
Anthropologists believe that in the early lives of men, gambling was already an event. Several artifacts proved it to be played even during ancient times. Scholars claim that ancient people related gambling with the supernatural world and objects used in healing, sorcery and divination were used as bets more often than not. During the middle ages, games of chance were banned and controlled by the conservative communities such as the Jewish communities. Gambling was also considered morally reprehensible by some major religions such as Islam and Confucianism.
Gambling nowadays is very widespread and is allowed in most countries while few regulate it. Gambling is greatly popular not just in casinos but even in sport houses where boxing, cricket, football, and even basketball takes place. Almost every game today has been used in gambling that is why it has become so immensely popular.
Gambling is also very beneficial in terms of the contribution they give to society. One example is the lottery. In the British Lottery, the jackpot reached several million pounds and many people are so into it that they really spent a lot just to guess the right six-number combination from numbers one to forty-nine. Because of the great income of lotteries, they allocate a pretty big percent of their income to charities which would help many underprivileged citizens such as street children, poor families, and the like.
Gambling really gives a lot of benefits. The world-wide negative perception of gambling is actually because of the addiction that it causes such as compulsive gambling disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders and just plain addiction just as strong as drugs or alcohol. But these are effects that are brought about by persons' lack of self-discipline. Let's not find gambling guilty for that. Instead, we should be thankful that gambling gives help in charitable institutions.
Gambling is already included in man's natural order of life. Eradicating it would be pretty hard. Instead of eliminating it, we should think of ways on how it could be improved and we should give focus on policies that would give beneficial ties between gambling and the economy of a country.
